StarrVista Substance use disorder programming
StarrVista substance use disorder prevention programming is designed to be educational, preventive, supportive and skill building. Programming is designed to be interactive and responsive to the needs of the participants. A variety of learning activities and styles will be used at each session, including groups, audiovisuals and role plays.
StarrVista’s prevention programming philosophy is grounded in the belief that since risk factors exist in all areas of a person’s life, it is necessary to focus on addressing both protective risk factors across all domains; individual, peer, family, school and community. Many factors influence a person’s chance of developing a mental health and/or substance use disorder. Effective prevention focuses on reducing those risk factors and strengthening protective factors that are most closely related to the problem being addressed.
StarrVista’s prevention services will utilize evidence-based programming incorporating the 40 Developmental Assets for children, youth and families. The Developmental Assets are the building blocks of healthy development that help young people grow up healthy, caring and responsible looking at internal and external assets.
The major goal of prevention is to prevent or delay the onset of substance use and other problem behavior and to delay the progression of use from experimental to regular use and dependence.
